Winter family photos in Hertfordshire - what does the word “family” mean to YOU?
It’s not often that I write about my family but I guess in a 3rd lockdown, with business being halted yet again, and with 15 cm of snow, there is only my family I can tell you about this time.
As I was walking along this beautiful snowy track, my husband pointed out “This would be a family photoshoot dream for you wouldn’t it”… well my hubby was both right and wrong. I have to say that shooting any moments in the snow is fabulous, of course. Especially in this part of the country where such a decent covering is rare… but as you know me, I also feel very strongly that moments, real beautiful moments can be had any time and any where, from this snowy open-field heaven to a tiny poorly lit terraced-house downstairs living room full of sibling interaction and motherly and fatherly love. I have photographed families in both settings and I genuinely cannot tell you which I prefer. Beautiful moments are beautiful moments, wherever they happen.
That said, this time around, I only had my husband and my two furry children, fields and snow and I wanted to make the most of this. Am no landscape photographer. But photographing and filming relationships, whether in Hertfordshire, or elsewhere, capturing the present moment and trying to celebrate “calm”, that, I can have a go at. So, for once, I picked up my camera and set out to take some of my own family winter photos and footage to tell my own family story.
So here is are a very few photographs but also most importantly also film that I put together to emulate what a walk with my family in the snow felt like.
I bet photos of your family walks will look completely different and they will probably sound completely different (yes, pictures definitely have sounds!). And that is one of the things I love about photographing families. We all have different types of families, small ones, large ones, with children, or without, with pets, or without. Families with one parent, or two, or three or more. Families with two dads. Families with two mums.
The word “family” is interesting, isn’t? It can mean so many different things to so many people. For me, family means “safety”, it means “complete”. It means “am ok”…. as long as I have my family, I am “safe, complete and ok”.
What does the word family mean to you?
Until I have your answer, here is a little film I have put together to share with you that element of “safety”, “completion” and “okay-ness”.
You may need to look for a “play” symbol in the white sky!
I know it’s difficult to make plans now… but spring will come and restrictions will ease. If you fancy having a family walk captured or a “mindful” film made especially for you, why not head over to my portfolio and see whether my style and approach could tempt you to book me for a photoshoot.
