How I approach documentary wedding photography - by not “ just taking wedding photos”.

The word “documentary” can be used widely in the photographic industry. It has a different meaning for different photographers, and that’s perfectly fine. We all have our own approaches, our own style and our own motivations for capturing an “I do”.

My approach and understanding of documentary wedding photography could be described as unlimited. Unlimited by rules imposed by others, and guided more by a) the conditions of the day and the venue b) what I feel my clients want and need from me and c) where my creative flow takes me.

My biggest principle I guess is that my style is observational and undirected. I try to make myself as discreet as possible and that way, I remain as invisible as possible and in turn the moments that I capture are as genuine as possible. However, over time, I have also developed a love for strong contrasts, for light, for large areas of negative space in images. So whilst documenting a scene as it is is important to me, finding those opportunities for unusual images is also a massive incentive for me.

So in a sense, my work isn’t just a case of snap snap snap and documenting your day. I want to try and create, make, compose totally unique and individual images that reflect your specific story. My work isn’t for the standard “insta perfect” or “insta pretty” reels or accounts. It aims to reflect the individuality of lives and circumstances.
