Mar Lodge Wedding Photography: a wedding that was NOT geared around photography…

“Hey Emily… could we book you to photograph our wedding, an outdoor ceremony in remote Aberdeenshire, Scotland, next year?”

Yes please.

“And… also, we don’t really want the day to be geared around photography… so any couple portraits to be done as quickly and as on the go as possible, is that okay?”

Oh yes please.

“And… we probably won’t have bridal prep to cover but we are all going for a dip in the river in the morning instead and would prefer photos of that, is that okay?”

Oh yes yes please.

“And one last thing… no maid of honour… but only a dog of honour…”
… and at that point I thought I had died and gone to heaven…

So here is my heavenly heaven day in Mar Lodge, near Ballater, in Aberdeenshire… quite possibly in the most beautiful place on earth. And spot Panko, the dog of honour, who completely stole my heart.

PS:

“Why don’t you want our wedding to be geared around photography?” I hear you ask (or you probably didn’t but here is my answer anyway 🤣)…

If you gear your wedding around photography it means you are no longer seeing your wedding for what it is: a wonderful celebration of you as a couple, being surrounded by all the people you love so you can all be in the present moment and enjoy those moments exactly as they are…

If you spend all your time thinking “This would look nice in the photos” or “I need to look like this for the photos” or “We can’t do this because of photos” or “The photos must be perfect”… then you will completely waste one of the best days of your life because you will be, in a sense, performing your way through it. The best weddings I have attended and that have created the best buzz that last for ages afterwards were the weddings were the couple were completely in the moment, and embracing whatever was coming their way.

We all perform to a certain degree in social situations, that’s a very human behaviour trait… but if you start to engineer too much or plan your reactions for the sake of photographs, then those highly staged moments actually don’t create that wholesome feelings that create the buzz we want from a wedding.

Do you. Be who you are. That, I promise you, will always lead to amazing images.
